The first Europeans to inhabit the Coromandel went in to harvest the valuable kauri trees of the forests, and it was sawmiller Charles Ring who is credited with first officially discovering gold there in October 1852. Stories of Coromandel gold had circulated since the earliest European contact with the area, but Ring’s find spawned the first New Zealand gold rush. It was a timely discovery too for the business community just starting to establish a foothold in nearby Auckland, eager to develop an industry close to home. Many able-bodied men had been leaving New Zealand to try their luck on the productive Victorian Goldfields.
New Zealand’s First Gold Discovery
Charles Ring panned just a few gold flakes from the Kapanga Creek, but it was enough to encourage an influx of prospectors to Coromandel town. For the vast majority of them however, reality would quickly set in as it was realised that alluvial gold was scarce. The real riches lay underground, embedded in quartz reefs created during aeons of volcanic activity.
Here in the home of the Ngati Maru people, there was another complication for prospectors to confront – local Maori opposition to European mining of their lands. Disputes over access rights would never be far from the surface as the exploration and mining of the Coromandel proceeded.
