Winchester may not feature on as many tourist itineraries as York or Bath, but this historic city in Hampshire makes a great place for a weekend break – and doesn’t get as crowded with coach parties as its more popular cousins. It’s just over an hour by train from London Waterloo, so easy to reach.
A Norman Cathedral
The capital of Wessex during the reign of King Alfred the Great (yes, the one who burnt the cakes), Winchester was once an important place of pilgrimage and its ‘don’t miss’ sight is still its stunning cathedral. Work on this Gothic beauty began in the 11th-century after the Norman Conquest, when the invaders pulled down the existing Saxon cathedral and re-used the stones to make their own ecclesiastical statement. Now it attracts literary pilgrims, who come to see the grave of the great novelist Jane Austen; she spent the last few weeks of her life in a house in Winchester. Sadly – a sign of the times - there’s an admission charge (£6.50 for adults, £9.50 if you want to go up the tower) but you’ll be able to see the library, home of the Winchester Bible, a gorgeous 12th-century illuminated manuscript.
