A lot has been said and written about America’s unemployed and how long they should be allowed to collect unemployment benefits. As state unemployment benefits run out and more and more Americans, join the ranks of those receiving federal unemployment extensions, the debate over just how much the federal government should help, has reached a fevered pitch.

Jobs and the Bush Era Tax Rates

Tied to the debate over extended unemployment is the proposed extension of the Bush era tax cuts. While most Democrats in Congress maintain that the cost of allowing the tax cuts to remain in place will have a profoundly negative effect on the federal deficit, most Republicans believe that raising taxes on anyone in the midst of a poor economy would only add insult to injury by killing jobs as badly needed cash is siphoned away from potential employers.

While pessimistically observing the US Congress and the debate over these issues, I realized that this process may produce what I believe could be the perfect outcome. If Congressional Democrats concede on Republican demands to extend the Bush tax cuts, and Republicans compromise by allowing an extension of unemployment benefits, I think for the first time in a long time, Americans will enjoy the benefits of a win win situation in Congress.
