The Canadian prairies are known for their flat endless fields, covered for the most part, by wheat and canola crops, which are only occasionally interrupted by cattle feedlots. To reach a specific location on the prairies one can take any number of different routes following one or many of the grid-like roads; Drumheller, Alberta is no exception. The town however, albeit a prairie town, is not at all like the wheat king image a person may envision. Instead, the prairies suddenly drop away in steep coulees, revealing layers and layers of different coloured earth with fossils protruding from the earth. At the bottom of this dramatic canyon lies the small town of Drumheller. With the impressive surrounding terrain, it is easy to imagine those Mesozoic lizards roaming around this “Dinosaur Capital of the World".
The Royal Tyrell Museum
The Royal Tyrell Museum is only six kilometres from Drumheller and is a world class venue that offers something of interest to people of all ages. It is located 138 kilometres north east of Calgary, and takes about an hour and a half to reach by car from there. With a $10 per adult entry fee and kids under seven being free, it is well worth the admission.
