After winning the 1860 presidential election, Abraham Lincoln left his hometown of Springfield, Illinois in February 1861. An elaborate 12-day journey to Washington was planned, in which Lincoln would make many stops and speeches along the way. However once the trip began, evidence revealed that Lincoln’s life was in potential danger.
Maryland Secessionists
By the time Lincoln left for Washington, many southern states had already seceded from the Union, and tensions were heightened with the prospect of civil war. Tension was especially high in Maryland, a predominantly pro-southern state.
Much tension in Maryland involved the growing secession sentiment in the state’s largest city, Baltimore. A parade for Lincoln had been scheduled in Baltimore, but many citizens were hostile to the incoming president. This caused great concern among those sworn to protect the Union.
